What Are You Committed To?
What are you committed to? I mean really committed to?
Before you answer that, I want you to look at all the things you do every day, all the things you have and all the things you don’t have. Guess what? Those are all the things you are committed to.
Unhappy in your job? If you have been unhappy for 6 months or longer than you are committed to being unhappy in your job.
Unhappy in your relationship (or lack thereof)? You are committed to being unhappy in your relationship status.
Same goes for your health. If you are overweight, out of shape, or have low energy and you have been unhappy and unsatisfied with that for a while, you are committed to that as a way of living.
To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with any of that. It only matters if you genuinely want things to be different but feel powerless for some reason to make that happen. If that’s the case, then you may be working inside a commitment level that doesn’t actually cause real change to take place.
Generally speaking, there are 5 different levels of commitment we move into and inside of when we’re faced with a desire, a goal or challenge:
Level 1 “I don’t care if it happens and I don’t want to.” The whatever attitude.
Level 2 “Sounds like a good idea, but I don’t want to put any effort into it.”
Level 3 “I might. I’ll give it a try.”
Level 4 “I’ll do my best until it gets tough. Then I’ll give up and blame circumstances.”
Level 5 “Whatever it takes no matter what, I’m going to make it happen.” It’s Scarlet O’Hara’s ‘As God is my witness I’ll never go hungry again,’ attitude.
This is what level 5 commitment looks like:
The only level where transformation takes place and changes are lasting is in level 5. That’s where marathon runners, Olympic athletes, successful business owners and entrepreneurs, professional musicians, etc., work inside of – in the “no matter what” arena.
I want to reiterate again that there’s nothing wrong with being in any of the other levels.
It’s just that if you want a real and lasting breakthrough and you’re wondering why you’re not making traction, it’s because you are playing at the wrong level and not owning up to that fact.
Commitments and goals are a lot like planes or trains; they leave the runway or the station and you either made it, or you didn’t. The plane or train doesn’t care about your excuses. They don’t care how hard you tried. They don’t care about your childhood. They simply leave when it’s time to leave and it’s not personal. And people who play inside of level 5 commitment know that. They have a wide-awake relationship to reality and outcomes. And they never do it alone. All athletes, politicians, stars, entrepreneurs; they all have support.
This is the time of year where everyone makes resolutions and commitments. If you’re someone who wants 2020 to be a different year – hell, a different decade – than what level are you committed to play in to really make that happen? Make 2020 the year you finally commit to yourself fully, at a level 5 commitment.
